Le Grand Canal de Versailles est le plus grand bassin du parc du château de Versailles. Il fut construit entre 1667 et 1679, à l'instigation de Le Nôtre. Le plan du Grand Canal se présente aujourd'hui sous la forme d'une croix dont la perspective principale orientée est-ouest est située dans l'axe du château et mesure 1,670 km. La branche perpendiculaire qui fut creusée en premier est orientée nord-sud et est longue de 1,5 km.
Les travaux achevés en 1679, le Grand Canal servira de point de départ aux feux d'artifice donnés lors des somptueuses fêtes royales que Louis XIV organisait à Versailles. L'hiver, lorsque le gel interdisait toute navigation, le Grand Canal se transformait alors en patinoire accueillant patineurs et traîneaux. Le Grand Canal jouait également un rôle pratique en recueillant l’eau qui s’écoulait des fontaines situées dans les jardins en amont.
The Grand Canal of Versailles is the largest basin in the park of the Palace of Versailles. It was built between 1667 and 1679, at the instigation of Le Nôtre. The plan of the Grand Canal is today in the form of a cross whose main east-west perspective is located in the axis of the castle and measures 1,670 km. The perpendicular branch that was dug first is oriented north-south and is 1.5 km long.
The work completed in 1679, the Grand Canal will serve as the starting point for the fireworks given during the sumptuous royal festivals that Louis XIV organized in Versailles. In winter, when the frost prohibited all navigation, the Grand Canal was transformed into an ice rink welcoming skaters and sleds. The Grand Canal also played a practical role in collecting water that flowed from the fountains in the gardens upstream.
