OTOK VISOVAC

VISOVAC ISLAND

Visovac Island stands almost in the exact centre of the lake, at an altitude of 46 m. The island covers an area of about 14000 m2 and its highest point is only 1.3 m above the water level. The island was first mention in the gift deed of King Ljudevit of Anjou (1342 - 1382) in which it was donated in 1345 to Prince Budislav Ugrinić, son of Ugrin from Bribir. The island, under the protection of the Croatian princes, was inhabited in the 14th century by the St. Autustine hermit order of monks who built a small monastery and church, consecrated to St. Paul. The Franciscans came to Visovac in 1445 and built a new church there at the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16th century. The Church of Our Lady of Mercy and the monastery have been extended and decorated for centuries. Today, thanks to the centuries-old care of the monks, the island is a distinctive floristic-horticultural landscape monument of harmonious life of man and nature.
