There was originally a Micro placed around here in 2008, which is why the nearby Village Hall Cache is a 2 part find. Since we placed that VH Cache out in 2019, the original Micro has been archived. It is therefore apt that we now place out a new Church Micro. The original cache placed near this church was not included in the Church Micro Series listings.
GRENEBI was recorded in the Doomsday Book Survey of 1086 as having two manors and two churches, All Hallows and St Ethelburga’s, twenty acres of meadow land, ten ploughs and a mill. There was a priest.
St Ethelburga’s has long since disappeared from Sutton, but All Hallows, now rebuilt and known as All Saints, is still the parish church for Granby & Sutton.
The settlement of Granby however is much older. In 1812 a heathen Roman altar was discovered in a farmyard just behind the church, and it is known that the first Christian missionaries did not destroy pagan shrines, but usually took over the site and built their own Christian church on it.
When the Danes sailed up the Trent on their way to Nottingham they pushed inland over the Trent hills and founded settlements at Granby, Plungar, Langar and other places.
