Geocache Description:

Welcome to Saplunara

Saplunara is a village in the Republic of Croatia, on the island of Mljet. It is administratively part of the Municipality of Mljet, Dubrovnik-Neretva County.

Due to its natural features, the area was protected by law as early as 1965 (significant landscape). It is one of the last remaining habitats of coastal sands in Croatia and a habitat of extremely rare and endangered sand fungi. Sandy vegetation is very specific due to adaptation to extreme living conditions (tide, low tide, salt, wind, etc.) and is extremely sensitive to changes caused by human activities.

Saplunare Bay is one of the largest remaining habitats of coastal sands in Croatia. It is directed towards the open sea of the southwest, it is about 1 km long, and in the central, narrowest part it is 350 m wide.
The sandy beaches of Saplunara are divided into Velika and Mala Saplunara. Not far from Saplunara is the bay of Blace (Limuni) with a beautiful also sandy beach, almost closed passage to the open sea that looks like a lagoon.

Its name comes from the Latin word sabulum which means sand. It is believed that it was first named by St. Paul the Apostle when he landed on Mljet after the shipwreck. Sv. In his Acts, the Apostle notes that the Apostle Paul spent a full 3 months on Mljet preaching the Gospel. Above the field of Žara there are the remains of an early Christian basilica which the people call the church of St. Paul, and the figure of St. Paul was inscribed on the seal of the Mljet municipality from 1850 to 1921!
