Come and explore Kittery Maine!  This is the first in a series of Mystery Caches meant to give you a taste of our towns in Northern New England. We thank 4Swans of Massachusetts for the idea.

  • Kittery was incorporated in 164D,  staking a claim as the "oldest incorporated town in Maine.¨
  • The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the nation's first federal navy yard, was established in 180C on Fernald's Island.
  • In 190X, The Treaty of Portsmouth, formally ending the Russo-Japanese War, was signed at the shipyard.
  • In 196B, the locally-built USS Thresher sank during sea trials more than 200 miles off the New England coast, costing the lives of 129 men including Shipyard civilian employees and military personnel.
  • The current Sarah Mildred Long bridge, the middle of three bridges connecting Kittery to Portsmouth NH, was open for travel in 201Z, replacing the original bridge which had been open to traffic in 19Y0.
  • Robert William Traip Academy is the public high school serving Kittery. It was founded in 190W as a private preparatory high school.
  • On May 18, 196A, the Maine legislature approved a Resolve, dedicating the Maine Turnpike (starting in Kittery) as "The Gold Star Memorial Highway."
