St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church (which was founded 4 years prior) purchased 4 acres of land in 1877 for a cemetery and was called Petersburg Cemetery of St John's Evangilical Lutheran Congragation . The first burial was in 1878, there are about 2600 memorials here currently.
