RO: Cetățile Ponorului reprezintă cel mai spectaculos complex carstic din România, o adevarată capodoperă a naturii ce impresionează cu pereți abrupți de peste 300m, ce ascund izbucuri, cascade, tuneluri și o superbă peșteră cu 14 lacuri, al cărui portal atinge 74m, fiind peștera cu cea mai înaltă intrare din România. Complexul carstic este format din 3 doline uriașe (formațiune carstică asemănătoare unui crater), având 300 m adâncime și mai mult de 1 km diametru. Practic sunt 3 grandioase amfiteatre din stâncă, ce comunică între ele prin portale deosebit de spectaculoase, având o singurâ intrare naturală prin Valea Cetăților.
Morfologia peşterii este dominată de prezenţa formelor de coroziune-eroziune (linguriţa de coroziune, lapiezuri subterane, terase, septe, marmite). Concreţiunile simt rare, detaşându-se, totuşi, acele stalagmite arenacee, provenite din depunerea carbonatului de calcar în pâlniile săpate în nisipul albiei de către apa de picurare. Stalagmitele “inverse” din Cetăţile Ponorului sunt printre cele mai frumoase din ţară.
Condiții de vizitare: Deși declarată Monument al Naturii, Peștera Cetățile Ponorului poate fi vizitată. Suprafața și galeria subterană până la Sala Taberei sunt accesibile oricărui turist care are mijloace de iluminare și cizme de cauciuc. Parcurgerea integrală se recomandă numai în cadrul unor expediții bine organizare.
Așadar, dacă ți-ai propus o vacanță sau ești doar în trecere prin Parcul Național Apuseni, nu rata acest impresionant monument al naturii.
Detalii legate de traseu: Parcurgerea Cetăţilor Ponorului prin doline este un traseu dificil cu urcări şi coborâri abrupte pe grohotiş, porţiuni prevăzute cu lanţuri şi cabluri, recomandat doar bocancilor experimentaţi. Începătorii pot ocoli această zonă imediat ce trec de balcoane urmărind marcajul de Cheile Galbenei pe punct galben până la intersecţia următoare cu punct albastru care duce direct la Portal.

EN: Ponor Fortress is the most spectacular karst complex in Romania, a true masterpiece of nature that impresses with steep walls over 300m, hiding springs, waterfalls, tunnels and a beautiful cave with 14 lakes, whose portal reaches 74m, being the cave with the highest entry in Romania. The karst complex consists of 3 huge sinkholes (a crater-like karst formation), 300 m deep and more than 1 km in diameter. There are basically 3 grandiose rock amphitheaters, which communicate with each other through particularly spectacular portals, having a single natural entrance through the Valley of the Citadels.
The morphology of the cave is dominated by the presence of corrosion-erosion forms (corrosion spoon, underground lapis lazuli, terraces, septa, pots). Concretions feel rare, however, detaching those arenaceous stalagmites, from the deposition of limestone carbonate in the funnels dug in the sand of the riverbed by the dripping water. The "reverse" stalagmites in the Ponor Citadels are among the most beautiful in the country.
Visiting conditions: Although declared a Monument of Nature, the Ponor Fortress Cave can be visited. The surface and the underground gallery up to the Camp Hall are accessible to any tourist who has lighting and rubber boots. Full coverage is recommended only in well-organized expeditions.

Details about the route: Going through the Ponor Fortress through the sinkholes is a difficult route with steep ascents and descents on the rubble, parts provided with chains and cables, recommended only for experienced boots. Beginners can go around this area as soon as they pass the balconies following the yellow Cheile marking on the yellow dot until the next intersection with the blue dot that leads directly to the Portal.
