I think I was born a bibliophile. I grew up in a house with books all around. Now my home is the same with my large collection of books pouring out in each room of the house. All the members of my family love books and reading. One of my first school memories is getting into trouble for rushing my work to make time to read!! I also remember countless nights reading under the covers in bed with a flashlight after my mother called lights out.
To log your find of this geocache you have to find a book that is hidden in the top storey of a little place where you can borrow or exchange books for free. This spot is part of an international network of free libraries that aims to promote reading around the world. Since 2011 Nieu-Bethesda also boasts one of the best second-hand and rare book shops in the country. This jewel of the village can be found close by. And if that is not enough books for you: less than 500m from the location of the geocache you will also find the local library.
In a way it is a book that caused us to end up in this magic little village in 2012. Athol Fugard is one of South Africa’s most renowned playwrights. The film adaptation of his play The Road to Mecca, inspired by the life of Helen Martins, the artist who created the Owl House, was our first encounter with Nieu-Bethesda and also the reason for our first trip to the village. We instantly fell in love with the place and settled here in 2012.
