There has been a church at this site since the Norman times, there was a priest mentioned in the Domesday Book as being at Ware. A further document from the time of William I confirms a church here.
The oldest part of the current building, the chancel, dates from the thirteenth century. This was the main church in Ware serving its residents and the Benedictine monks across the road at Ware Priory.
The building is faced with flint and the tower is surmounted by a Hertfordshire spike.
