Geocache Description:

Rock Eagle Effigy Mound is an archaeological site in Putnam County, Georgia, U.S. estimated to have been constructed c. 1000 BC to AD 1000 (1,000 to 3,000 years ago). The earthwork was built up of thousands of pieces of quartzite laid in the mounded shape of a large bird (102 ft long from head to tail, and 120 ft wide from wing tip to wing tip). Although it is most often referred to as an eagle, scholars do not know exactly what type of bird the original builders intended to portray. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) because of its significance. The University of Georgia administers the site. It uses much of the adjoining land for a 4-H camp, with cottages and other buildings.

Area is free to access.  Hunt this multi during daylight hours only.   Adjacent to the mound is a beautiful picnic area beside the lake with a view of the 4-H campus.

For information gathering only: This set of cordinates will land you in a parking lot, in front of a  Bronze Marker at the Rock Eagle Effigy.   Please take the time to explore this area and take in all the signage.  Climb to the top of the tower and check out the Rock Eagle with your own eyes.   Very Interesting history here.  Excellent picnic area . The lake can be fished with  a state fishing licence and artifical bait only.   Boat use:  Paddling or trolling motor use only.  NO SWIMMING!

Now  for the quick and easy Multi.

North:  Find the century referenced at the bottom of the marker. Convert the roman numerals. Write it out . example 1900 or xxxx

Subtract  1442 from XXXX = yyyy.    Then subtract yyyy from the last 4 digits of the original north cordinate .This will give you the final north cordinate.  example    n033 2z.zzz

West:  Find the referenced 4 digit year listed at the bottom of the marker. Take the last 2 digits of this  referenced year, and subtract from the last 2 digits of the west cordinate.  We will call this total  YY.   This will give you the correct last 2 digits of the west cordinate.     Example   083 23. 2YY  Good luck. !    The final can be driven to, or walked to from the mound.

Congrats to HDAtha  on being the FTF on this cache.
