Geocache Description:

Lough Owel is a large, calcareous (limestone) spring-fed lake which gives way to it's clear water. It has a maximum depth of 21 metres (69 ft).

Church Island is the largest island on Lough Owel. It holds the ruins of a church which was traditionally called St. Loman's Oratory, named after a hermit who lived on the island. It was here tradition tells us that St. Loman subsisted on a diet of Alexandric herbs (smyrnium olusatrum), which can be commonly found on the island to this day.

A Viking chieftain, Turgesius, is said to have been drowned in Lough Owel by Máel Sechnaill mac Maíl Ruanaid in 845.
