Lough Owel is a large, calcareous (limestone) spring-fed lake which gives way to it's clear water. It has a maximum depth of 21 metres (69 ft).
Church Island is the largest island on Lough Owel. It holds the ruins of a church which was traditionally called St. Loman's Oratory, named after a hermit who lived on the island. It was here tradition tells us that St. Loman subsisted on a diet of Alexandric herbs (smyrnium olusatrum), which can be commonly found on the island to this day.
A Viking chieftain, Turgesius, is said to have been drowned in Lough Owel by Máel Sechnaill mac Maíl Ruanaid in 845.
Always be prepared before undertaking a T5 cache where a kayak/boat are required. Particularly consider weather conditions and ensure that you have all the necessary equipment, including a personal floatation device and a way of requesting assistance. It is strongly advised that you do not undertake this cache alone.
