Geocache Description:

Solar Farm

Khi Solar One (KSO) is a Concentrated Solar Power Plant - solar thermal power plant. Khi Solar One is 50 megawatts (MW), and is the first solar tower plant in Africa.

You can see the huge 205-metre tower on the horizon from the N14, surrounded by its more than 4000 massive wall-like solar mirrored panels, each the size of a small house.

The KSO is an evolution of the PS10 and PS20 projects, operating since 2007 and 2009 respectively in Spain. KSO solar field is made up of more than 4,000 heliostats (large mirrors), totaling up to 576,800 m2 (6,209,000 sq ft) of mirror surface, focusing solar energy on a boiler located on top of the centralized 205-metre-high (673 ft) tower. KSO uses a superheated cycle that should be able to reach a maximum operating temperature of 530 °C.

The solar mirror panels that surround the tower are tilted and constantly moving at an angle to reflect the sun's rays onto the top of the tower. Each of the mirrors is computerised with a GPS signal that indicates the time of day and thus the best angle at which to reflect the sun.

The project has been developed by the Spanish company Abengoa, and the project was financed with help from Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and community group, Khi Community Trust.

The solar plant is 140 hectares and produces 50 MW of energy, reducing the country's carbon dioxide emissions by about 138 000 metric tons a year. It is apparently the first tower plant to achieve 24 hours of operation with solar energy only, and came into full power in October 2016.

The road's shoulders are wide enough to park on either side. Please place the container exactly how you found it. Enjoy the cache and the geocaching journey!
