The northern end of Lough Swilly
Lough Swilly lies between the Fanad Peninsula to the west and Inishowen to the east. In Irish Loch Súilí means Eye Lake or the Lake of Shadows. It is a haven for birds and marine life.
There are many stories of shipwrecks, including the SS Laurentic, which sank in 1917 with the loss of 354 lives. It went down with 3,211 ingots of gold - not all of which have been recovered!
