Two Wantagh firefighters were killed when the World Trade Center Twin Towers fell in 2001. Lee Fehling and Kevin Donnelly were honored with street namings at the west and east ends here at Wantagh Fire District Station 6 which serves as a training center. The streets that serve as an entrance and exit for Station 6 are now called Lt. Kevin Donnelly Way and Lee Fehling Way.
Donnelly, was a lieutenant in the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) with East Village Ladder Company 3 in addition to serving as a volunteer in Wantagh. Fehling was a Wantagh native was a two-year FDNY veteran with Engine 235 in Brooklyn.
This memorial was dedicated on September 10, 2017 and features several pieces of steel from Ground Zero in memory of all who perished from the collapse of the Twin Towers, including first responders, and the passengers aboard American Airlines flight 11 and United Airlines flight 175. The flowers are in memory of those lost on Flight 93, which crashed in Somerset County, PA and the entire memorial is outlined in the shape of the Pentagon, in memory of those lost in the building and on American Airlines flight 77.
After the World Trade Center was attacked on September 11, 2001, steel beams recovered from Ground Zero were shipped across the country to stand as solemn reminders of the events that occurred that day, and as memorials for those who lost their lives in the attacks. Over 80 steel beam memorial sites can be found on Long Island at schools, parks, fire departments, and other civic and religious groups. They are listed as National Memorial Sites, and are meant to be peaceful places for remembrance and reflection. Each year, many of these locations host annual 9/11 memorial events.
