This is a very popular spot with tourists, particularly on a sunny day (you’ll see why if you visit!), so you might not be able to park very close by (if you do, please be considerate of the residents and businesses in this area). But it’s a beautiful area, with some really picturesque walks: the walk from Settle to Stainforth Foss along the Ribble Way is well worth it!
Why not bring along a rubbish bag and carry out your own mini Cache in Trash Out event? As it’s such a popular spot, it can be really challenging for the landowners to keep on top of the (sadly) inevitable litter.
If you’re visiting around October, see if you can spot any salmon attempting to leap over the Foss, en-route to their spawning (breeding) grounds further up the Ribble Catchment.

Question 2
Wild Atlantic salmon are now a protected species in the UK, as their numbers are rapidly decreasing in British rivers, and globally. What can you do to help?
- Reduce your use of fossil fuels to reduce your contribution to climate change, don’t buy/eat salmon from fish farms (they can spread deadly lice to wild salmon), follow the Marine Conservation Society’s current advice on eating fish (W 002° 16.783)
OR
- Eat lots of salmon, use lots of fossil fuels, create lots of plastic pollution so that it ends up in the rivers and seas (W 002°16.825)
