Geocache Description:

Small magnetic container, finger tip search and stealth needed - be careful of driving Muggles!

2nd in the series of Mine caches following the history of mining in Atherton and the surrounding areas. This statue commemorates the Lovers Lane pit explosion where 27 men died and lots more were significantly injured by loosing limbs. Some of the workers were as young as 12 and 13 years old.

"Shortly before twelve on the morning of Thursday, 30th March 1872, the people of Atherton were subjected to a thunderous roar. They immediately recognised the significance of this, as would anyone in a mining community. The explosion came from the Lovers Lane pit which was situated half-way between Howe Bridge and the present location of the L.U.T. bus depot.

The scene is not hard to imagine — the shocked looks on hearing the explosion, the rush of the women and children towards the pit and the false rumours flying round as they do in any disaster." https://leigh.life/index.php?page=wiki&id=leighlife:minedis
