John Kerr was the first settler on record in Emlenton in 1810. By 1834, homes were being built and lumber was a prosperous business in the area. Emlenton became a trading center with warehouses along the river bank, several hotels, and the Allegheny Valley Railroad. Joseph Fox, a wealthy merchant from Philadelphia, and Andrew McCaslin, owned the property that became the borough of Emlenton charted in 1856. In 1867 the first oil well was drilled near Emlenton, making Emlenton a rail point for pipe and other oil field supplies. In 1882, a group of local men started what became the Columbia Gas System envisioning a natural gas lighting system. In 1891 local oil producers started Emlenton producers Oil Company which would eventually become Quaker State. In 1990, the refinery was sold and all operations were stopped in 2000.
Now the beauty of Emlenton is left for us to enjoy. Take advantage of the bike and hiking trails. Explore along the Allegheny River and all around Emlenton to find out lots of history behind this once booming town. There's also dining in several restaurants and taverns. One of the local residents even appeared on a show on the History Channel.
The area for the final location was also a tourist hot-spot back in the hustling and bustling days of Emlenton. People would come here to relax and enjoy what nature had to offer.
