Il paese sorse in epoca medievale sulla vetta di una collina come possesso della famiglia Aldobrandeschi del ramo di Santa Fiora. Nel corso del Trecento, dopo una serie di lotte, venne conquistata dai Senesi che iniziarono lo sfruttamento delle vicine miniere di rame e argento e controllarono l'intera zona fino alla metà del Cinquecento, epoca in cui anche Roccastrada entrò a far parte del Granducato di Toscana, a seguito della definitiva caduta della Repubblica di Siena, avvenuta nel 1555.
La cinta muraria fu costruita nel corso del XII secolo, a protezione del centro storico di Roccastrada, che proprio in quell'epoca stava conoscendo un periodo di sviluppo e di espansione urbanistica.
La cerchia fu costruita su tre lati, degradando all'estremità settentrionale e a quella meridionale del lato occidentale, ove la presenza di ripidi massi rocciosi garantiva un sistema difensivo naturale per quella zona del borgo.
Nel corso dei secoli il sistema difensivo originario ha subito varie modifiche in epoche successive, tanto da venire a trovarsi in vari punti addossato ad abitazioni, oltre a rimanere privato delle varie torri di guardia che a tratti si elevavano lungo il perimetro esterno della cortina muraria. The town was built in medieval times on the top of a hill as a possession of the Aldobrandeschi family of the Santa Fiora branch. During the fourteenth century, after a series of struggles, it was conquered by the Sienese who began the exploitation of the nearby copper and silver mines and controlled the entire area until the mid-sixteenth century, a time when Roccastrada also became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, following the definitive fall of the Republic of Siena, which occurred in 1555.
The walls were built during the 12th century to protect the historic center of Roccastrada, which at that time was experiencing a period of development and urban expansion.
The circle was built on three sides, degrading to the northern and southern extremities of the western side, where the presence of steep rocky boulders guaranteed a natural defensive system for that area of the village.
Over the centuries, the original defensive system has undergone various changes in subsequent eras, so much so that it is located in various points leaning against houses, as well as being deprived of the various guard towers that at times rose along the outer perimeter of the curtain wall.
