Doctor Who & the Fires of Pompeii Traditional Cache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

myst_again: After seeing the note about mold I was skeptical but glad I checked it out. The bench/library lid has been compromised letting moisture in from our severe heavy rains recently. I removed the geocache and will have to construct a new one as it indeed WAS covered in mold. Although full of books, a large number will likely need to be thrown away. I will contact the fire station this week to alert them about the condition of the library. If they get it cleaned out I will at least replace it in a plastic bag ... but this one might be out of commission for quite a bit if they decide to do major repairs/replace the container.

Geocache Description:

DO NOT PARK IN FRONT OF THE BAY DOORS -- NOT EVEN "JUST FOR A MINUTE"

This is one of my Doctor Who themed geocaches.

The Tenth Doctor tries taking Donna Noble, his new companion, to ancient Rome for her first trip in the TARDIS but seems to have miscalculated, landing them instead insight of Vesuvius. They're in Pompeii, on August 23, 79 AD:  the day before "Volcano Day". However, something seems amiss. The Soothsayers' predictions seem to always be correct but they don't seem attuned to the impending destruction.  The Doctor must determine what is at the root of the issue and fight with Donna over the serious moral dilemma he faces.

This episode is important to the Doctor Who series in that it explains why sometimes he can help and sometimes not -- in this case The Doctor explains to Donna, "Pompeii is a fixed point in history. What happens, happens. There is no stopping it."   We know enough of Donna's personality to know that this isn't the end of it and he ends up saving one family.

Also notable is the appearance from Karen Gillan, who would later star as the Eleventh Doctor's companion, Amy Pond.   It also featured a guest appearance of Peter Capaldi, who would later portray the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor --- eventually, in one of Twelve's moral struggling in the episode, The Girl Who Died, he references this episode and remembers whose face he chose and why-- to remind himself that "I'm the Doctor and I save people."

One of my favorite things about Doctor Who is how the show takes you to periods of Earth history.  This episode was eerie to re-watch as our family had the opportunity to explore the huge archaeological site of Pompeii back in 2017.  You can wander the streets for hours, easily imagining the life of the times due to the amount of preservation.  Even better was getting to grab a few of the many geocaches that are scattered throughout the site!

I remember a conversation from several years ago where woodwalker9 was encouraging me to start hiding my own geocaches.  Part of the conversation veered to how he wished there was a geocache located at this location to bring geocachers to the 9/11 Memorial here at the corner of Beebe Capps & Elm. (See the added photos.) Since then another geocache that was too close in proximity has been archived and I FINALLY got around to placing those geocaches.  After a nice chat with a lady in Central Station, I was able to make this happen --- better late than never, woodwalker9?

This is a simple geocache located in front of the Central Station doors to encourage you to geocache through time, hopefully not miscalculating YOUR parking skills as The Doctor is prone to do in his TARDIS.

Please ONLY PARK IN THE MARKED PARKING SPOTS in front of the office.  A library is handy to provide you everything you need.

If you decide to explore the memorial, be careful as you WALK over across the driveway that leads to the bay doors.

Permission was given to use this location for the geocache, but it is likely that the firemen are unaware of its placement.

Congratulations to GKMFalcon for the FTF!!
