There is a tale told in hushed circles, and often after several pints in The White Python, a tavern not far from here, about the mysterious disappearance of Arachna, a widow who always dressed in black. She was a local who spent many an hour propping up the bar and scaring anyone who would listen with tales of strange goings on in the woods around Bessborough especially at Hallowe’en . She was thought of as just a mad old woman up to mischief with her stories of killer spiders and man-eating snakes.
One Hallowe’en she frightened the wits out of a gang of teenagers who left the pub in a rush and in a very distressed state, and were seen running towards the woods. Later that night Arachna staggered out into the cool autumn air saying she was going to look for them and was never seen again.
No body was ever found and no one could shed any light on what had happened. But there were rumours. Maybe she hadn’t been mad, maybe there was some truth to her stories.
See if you can find out what became of Arachna
