In de 17e eeuw groeide de bevolking en werd er in Den Haag heel veel gebouwd. Hierdoor werd er ook in Rijswijk veel gebouwd. Op het land van de boeren werden steeds meer landhuizen gebouwd voor rijke mensen. Er kwamen timmermannen, metselaars en winkeliers in Rijswijk wonen, omdat er werk voor hen was. Ze gingen rondom de kerk wonen, zo ontstond het oude dorp. Vandaag de dag wordt het nog steeds “Oud-Rijswijk” genoemd.
