EPITAPH (1998)
Endos skulptur Epitaph - minnebilde - i Flakstad, forteller om noe eller noen som har vært og som man vil eller burde huske. I den forstand er skulpturen et minnesmerke, selv om kunstneren har unnlatt å bestemme hva som skal minnes. Kunstnerens valg av skulpturens plassering, like ved en trafikkert vei med et steinras som bakgrunn, vitner om det enkle estetiske raffinement som den japanske visuelle kulturen er blitt så berømmet for.Som symbol gir den uttrykk for evige lovmessigheter i et tidsbegrep som er sirkulært til forskjell fra det lineære tidsbegrepet som vi er vant til å tenke i den vestlige tankemodell.

The sculpture “Epitaph”, which Endo has created Flakstad, reflects many of the artist's central thoughts. Epitaph - a memorial plaque – tells a story about someone or something that was and which is of value to remember and preserve as a memory, concretised in a familiar and enduring material. The circular shape together with the stone material refers to the dual concept of both the universal and the eternal.
The fantastic grey stone colour, with its millions of nuances, the drama portrayed in rockslide in the background, combined with the undramatic and ordinariness in the surrounding environment - Endo has taken all this into consideration in his choice of background for the placement of Epitaph. As a symbol, it is an expression of eternal legalities in a concept of time which is circular, unlike the linear concept of time we are accustomed to in the Western conceptual model.
