Es un número totalmente gratuito. Los teléfonos móviles pueden llamar al 112 siempre que haya cobertura GSM de algún operador aunque no sea nuestra propia compañía de teléfono (del inglés Global System for Mobile communications, o sea el sistema global para las comunicaciones móviles).
Todas las redes atienden este tipo de llamadas gratuitamente. Existe un acuerdo que engloba a todas las compañías que dan servicio de telefonía.
Si se marca el número 112 en la Unión Europea o el 911 en Estados Unidos, la red GSM que haya disponible desviará la llamada al centro de emergencia más próximo.
Aunque tengamos el teclado del teléfono móvil bloqueado, es posible realizar la marcación del número de emergencia 112. Es decir, bastaría con encender el móvil y si tiene batería, aunque ignoremos el PIN de acceso podríamos efectuar la llamada. Más aún incluso sin tarjeta SIM en el teléfono.
Estas llamadas de emergencia tienen prioridad sobre otras llamadas. En caso de sobrecarga de red desconectarán otra llamada de un abonado cualquiera, si la red no dispone de capacidad disponible.
El 112 es el número de emergencias y catástrofes de todo tipo, en el cual se integran todos los cuerpos de rescate, cuerpos policiales, bomberos, emergencias médicas, salvamento marítimo, agentes rurales, etc. y otros cuerpos de cualquier otro tipo en situaciones de emergencia y catástrofe como seguridad ciudadana y protección civil o accidentes, robos, agresiones, violencia machista, rescates, etc.
