Geocache Description:

UPDATED 01/29/23

Go to the waypoint, where you will be standing in the alley where the infamous gangster, John Dillinger was shot and killed by undercover federal agents. Killed at the age of 31, Dillinger had been arrested several times, helped gang members escape from prison, and escaped from prison twice himself. While on the run from police, Dillinger and his gang went on crime sprees around the country, robbing banks, and killing several people. The search for Dillinger and his gang was then ramped up and the newly formed FBI began a nationwide search.

Eventually, Dillinger’s girlfriend, Anna Sage informed the FBI that Dillinger would be attending a movie at the Biograph Theater (now the Victory Gardens Theater). The night of July 22, 1934, Anna Sage met Dillinger at the theater, wearing a bright orange dress. It is said that her dress glowed bright red under the lights of the marquee, making her and Dillinger visible to the FBI agents, and giving her the nickname the “Lady in Red”.

FBI agents were waiting outside of the theatre, and upon exiting an agent called out Dillinger’s name. Dillinger reached for his pistol and tried to escape by running into the alley. Agents shot him 3 times and he fell face down on the pavement. He was rushed to the hospital where he pronounced dead at 10:50 pm. Hundreds of curious people showed up to the Biograph Theater to bear witness to the spot where Dillinger met his end.

When you reach the waypoint, you will see the John Dillinger Mural on the wall of a restaurant adjacent to the alley.  A study of the Mural will help you crack the code to open the cache.

Now you will be ready to proceed to the cache.  Walk behind the restaurant.

You are looking for a medium sized magnetic lockbox. To “break into” the cache you must figure out the clues and crack the code. You also need to be extra stealthy for this one because there are a lot of muggle agents nearby.

Take the digits displayed on the mural (above the words John Dillinger)

Then add to that number the age Dillinger was when he was killed

Then add to the sum the year Dillinger was killed

Then subtract 10,000 from the sum (because, why not)

Now you have the secret code.

mural # +age +year -10,000 = code

* the magnet is strong like John Dillinger's desire for crime, so be like the FBI and pull hard. Thanks.

** please rotate the numbers back to zero when you lock it up. Please hide in the same spot out of sight. Thanks.

*** please note that this cache was moved a short distance from its original location near the Mural (on January 9, 2023) due to muggle-related thievery on several occasions.
