Geocache Description:

Little Norfolk Bay

Little Norfolk Bay was a port for both goods and visitors to Port Arthur and the Peninsula.

In 1836 construction began on what is believed to be the first railroad in Australia to carry passengers.  It ran between Little Norfolk Bay and Long Bay, and by eliminating the sea voyage around the south of the peninsula it shortened the travelling time between Hobart and Port Arthur.  The carriages were propelled by convicts.  The railway fell into disrepair after Port Arthur closed.

The very protected bay is home to a wealth of animal life.  Many different species use it as a breeding ground and you can often see shoals of little fish around the jetty and dolphins out in the bay.  The whole of Norfolk Bay is a declared shark nursery.

It is a thriving boating area, with the jetty replaced in 2008 and new boat club rooms nearing completion.

The cache is on the edge of the bay.  The access is fairly easy but you might get slightly wet feet if its a very high tide. Please replace the cache carefully.
