Geocache Description:

This is one of a small series placed for you to imagine times before this area was mapped and the Cattle Track was a stock route. From 1870's, the cattle route to the high country was via the Fainter Spur, now known simply as the "CATTLE TRACK"

If you look around you will notice some remnant signs of times gone by when this spot was used to yard cattle enroute to the high country. It was burnt out in the 2006 bushfires, but the posts of the gates are visible.

John Ryder managed Tawonga Station in 1867, in 1869 selected land in the Kiewa Valley.  By the  1880’s the Ryder run was bounded by Mt Cope Mt Jim, Mc Kay and Wallaces Hut. Hollonds had a selection of 320 acres where Mt Beauty Township is now and the main street is accordingly named.  Familiar names who used this route include Ryders, Cooper, Hicks and Maddisons.

NOTE : GPS may not settle well. The post is the original gate post as you enter the cattle yards from 5-ways. Please replace cache as found. Walkers are requested to travel on the access tracks and trails marked in brown on the map to avoid fast mountain bikers.
