Sredi 19. stoletja je Maribor dosegla Južna železnica, ki povezuje Dunaj s Trstom. Na desnem bregu reke Drave so zrasle železniške delavnice ter velika železničarska kolonija, s tem pa tudi drugi obrati in nova naselja. Da bi skrajšali pot med novimi naselji in mestom, je mestna občina leta 1885 čez reko zgradila železno brv na lesenih podpornikih.
Ko je brv leta 1903 odnesla narasla Drava, so zgradili novo na zidanih stebrih. To je leta 1941 razstrelila umikajoča se jugoslovanska vojska. Obnovljeno brv je spet odnesla Drava, ki je leta 1946 narasla zaradi gradnje nove hidroelektrarne. Nova brv, ki so jo odprli leta 1948, je služila svojemu namenu skoraj 60 let.
Ker je bila brv že v zelo slabem stanju, se je mesto odločilo za obnovo. Na razpisu je z zvišano prvo nagrado zmagal projekt, ki je bil realiziran v letu 2007.
Da gre za resnično inovativen pristop, pa priča tudi dejstvo, da je projekt na konferenci »Footbridge 2008«, ki je potekala v Portu (Portugalska), dobil prvo nagrado v kategoriji »Technical Medium Span«. Na natečaj je bilo prijavljenih 50 projektov iz vsega sveta. Strokovno žirijo je projekt prepričal z izredno dodelanimi, drznimi in inovativnimi inženirskimi in tehničnimi rešitvami, ki so zagotovile izvedbo zelo vitke in transparentne, a geometrijsko zelo zanimive mostne konstrukcije, istočasno pa spretno reševale izredno zapletene in težke pogoje gradnje na lokaciji obstoječega objekta.




In mid 19th century the Southern Railway reached Maribor and on the right river bank large railway workshops and new settlements were constructed. To shorten the way between the town and new settlements the first footbridge was constructed in 1885. Through the years, the footbridge was destroyed several times, either by risen river or by the war. The last footbridge was built in 1948 and served its purpose for almost 60 years.
After so many years the footbrige was in really bad condition so the city decided for reconstruction. The public tender was won by the project, which was realized in 2007.
At the »Footbridge 2008« conference in Porto, Portugal, the project was awarded with the first prize in category »Technical Medium Span« in competition of 50 projects from all over the world. The Studenci footbridge convinced the jury with its very elaborate, daring and innovative engineering and technical solutions, which ensured the construction of the slim and transparent, geometrically very interesting bridge and at the same time solved the difficult problems at the site of construction.
