Who are Alf & Mel?

Alfred Royden Smedley (1913 – 2006)

Alf and his brother Alan started Smedley Press Pty Ltd at 33 Hastings street Glenelg South. They ran the business for 30 years.  The building is still there.  They published the Glenelg Guardian (a paper devoted to the interests of Glenelg. Its watchword: Progress, not stagnation) was established in 1913. For much of this time, it was owned by the Smedley family of Glenelg. It was acquired by Messenger Press in 1964.  Other publications include Murray Valley Standard & Kangaroo Island Courier.  One-time editor of the Glenelg Guardian, Alan Smedley, became the Glenelg mayor.
