Khirbet Samara sits atop a small kurkar (calcareous sandstone) hill 28 meters above sea level and overlooks Alexander River on its way from the Samaria Mountains to the Mediteranean Sea.
The building served as a customs house (a "Gomurk") by the Ottoman authority to collect duty on watermelons headed from "Minat el-Batich" to the watermelon harbor, carried on rafts and by camel caravans.
Near the hill there is a eucalyptus grove with picnic tables and car access. You can also find Avital Horse Ranch nearby, from which you can take horse riding tours in the area.
The cache is not inside the building.
