Geocache Description:

08 October 2022, 08:00 - 10:00

Does the sign of that Earth symbol with a slice removed get your heart pumping?   Do you avoid Earthcaches at all cost?  Do you enjoy looking at geology, but don't appreciate the quiz afterwards?  Whether you love Earthcaches or do them only as a last resort, join us at Kamaole Beach Park II in Kihei, Maui to share geocaching stories, maybe get some tips on local caches, and, in particular, ask any questions you might have about particular Earthcaches.   The CO is a geologist visiting Maui from the DC area.   We'll provide some pastries, but don't drink coffee, so bring some if you want it.   We'll try to grab one of the picnic tables and will have something geocaching related to identify the event.   And, in case you wonder about that UV attribute, we'll have a special log to sign - or, more precisely, a special way to read the log once you sign.  We will also have a rock that UV light brings to life.   Finally, we'll have a few bags of polished rocks for the young and young at heart.  Feel free to stay as long or short as you wish and enjoy the beach.

This cache is part of a limited release of Community Celebration Events to celebrate 20 years of geocaching.   While geocaching celebrated its 20th year in 2020, Earthcaching began in January of 2004 when geoaware posted Earthcache I - a simple geology tour of Wasp Head in New South Wales, Australia.   The first US Earthcache was also posted by geoaware in August of 2004 with Mica City Earthcache in Colorado.   The oldest active Earthcaches in Hawaii were placed on the same day in September of 2005 in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.   Finally, the oldest active Earthcache on Maui was place in April of 2007 at Dragon's Teeth.

Maui may not be rich in multis, letterboxes, wherigos, or events, but Maui is rich in Earthcaches, left in large part by visitors to the island.   Every October, we celebrate Interational Earthcache Weekend.   This year, that's Oct. 8-9th, so start Earthcaching weekend off with a Community Celebration Event and then go find an Earthcache to earn your virtual souvenir!

Geocachers hosted events between May 2, 2020 and December 31, 2022. Learn more about Community Celebration Events on the Geocaching Blog.
