Depot Street Traditional Cache

Since the railroad first came to Chippewa Falls in 1875 there have been approximately a dozen rail depots in town.  This includes passenger and freight depots, even the little electric tramway station that still stands by one entrance of Irvine Park.  This cache is on the site of the Omaha Depot. Actually one of the two Omaha Depots, a confusing tale that you can read about in greater detail at  https://detritusofempire.blogspot.com/2020/09/tales-of-omaha-depot.html  .  As with train depots everywhere this was the site of many small dramas.  Reunions and departures.  Pickpocketings and arrests.  In 1918 the citizens of Chippewa Falls, thousands strong, marched here along with recruits heading off to service in The Great War.  The route along Canal and Main Street was lit with " a trail of red fire", and skyrockets were fired over head.  A brass band played patriotic songs. Mothers and sweethearts wept.  It's a much quieter place now.  The last building of that era - a freight depot constructed circa 1897 - was demolished without fanfare some time in the 1980's.  Note:  The tracks are still in use.  There's no need to go near them, the cache is hidden much closer to the road.  Good luck, this is a tricky one!
