Geocache Description:

Ballinoroher Castle was first mentioned in 1611, when it was among the possessions of Donal MacCarthy of Kildee. It was probably built a couple of decades before by the Sliocht Inghine Ui Chruimin sept of the MacCarthys Reaghs and meant to guard a ford through the Argideen River which was the only pass between Bandon and the southwest.

Legend has it that in the mid-17th century, when the Cromwellian forces were advancing, the family hid their gold and valuables in a secret compartment in the castle walls or in a tunnel which ran south from the castle to an old fort, some 250 meters away.

So, I decided it would be a great place to hide a Geocache, which hopefully won't be as difficult to find as the elusive MacCarthy family treasure.

The cache is hidden by the public road,no need to enter the castle. BYOP and please replace exactly where you found it.
