Geocache Description:

The Historic Green Cemetery is an old cemetery in Deptford, N.J., near its border with Woodbury. It was founded by Lewis M. Green in 1887. Green was a notable freemason, a one-time travelling clock salesman and a five-term mayor of Woodbury. Eventually, he made his fortune selling herbal remedies for dyspepsia, a condition from which he himself suffered.

To commemorate the centennial of the cemetery's founding, it was renamed the Historic Green Cemetery in 1987.

The Historic Green Cemetery is the final resting place for the following notable Woodbury natives:

-- Army 1st Lt. William Stokes Bonsal, a World War I veteran killed in action while on duty in France in 1918. The Woodbury American Legion post bears his name, and he was the inspiration for the Bonsal Blues Band which operates in and around South Jersey.

-- David O. Watkins, mayor of Woodbury from 1886 to 1890, was elected to the New Jersey State Assembly in 1887 and later became Speaker of the Assembly. When the governor of New Jersey resigned in 1898, Watkins served as acting governor from 1898-1899.

The cache is not at the posted coordinates, but it would be a good place to park. From those coordinates head out to the main gate which you passed through to get to this point. Once outside the gate, turn and face the cemetery then find the plaque on the right column.

Use the following format to find the coordinates for the cache container:

N 39° 49.ABC W 075° 08.DEF

A=Number of letters in the second word on the fifth line of the plaque -1

B=Number of original trustees whose have the word "GREEN" as part of their name

C=Number representing the month when the cemetery was founded

Now move over to the plaque on the left column.

D=Number of letters in the first name of the third trustee listed

E=Number of trustees with the same last name

F=Number of fasteners holding the plaque to the column

The cache is not on or near any of the graves or headstones.  Good luck!
