Nashville City Cemetery is generally open from 7:30 AM till Dusk, 7 days a week. Please obey all rules and respect this historic cemetery. There are two parking areas, one near the posted coordinates, another in front of the bathrooms at the rear of the cemetery. Please enjoy this walking tour of one of Nashville's hidden treasures. Each stage is located within one of the ten history "books" located throughout the property. Although, there are only five in the Adventure Lab, I encourage you to visit all ten to learn more about this fascinating property. The City Cemetery is the oldest continuously active public cemetery in Nashville. In 1972, it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places due to its historical and architectural significance. The cemetery opened in 1822 and by 1850 it was the final resting place for over 11,000 people of every race, religion and economic status. There have been over 20,000 interments here over the years and many removals. New burials are rare, but still occur in family plots, sold before the cemetery was closed to new burials in 1880.
Physical geocaches are no longer allowed in Tennessee cemeteries, due to a state law that bans "playing at any game or amusement" within a cemtery. However, the public is encouraged to visit cemeteries, enjoy their beauty and to do historical research. The Nashville Old City Cemetery Adventure Lab should take you less than an hour to complete and will give you a chance to stretch your legs and do a little historical research as you explore this scenic location, before moving off cemetery grounds to find a physical cache nearby.
