The John Ford “Stock company”

John Ford is considered by many to the best film director ever. He won 4 Best director Academy Awards.  No one else has won more than three. Although mostly remembered for making westerns, none of his four Oscar winners were westerns? 1935 “The Informer”, 1940 “The Grapes of Wrath”, 1941 “How Green was My Valley” (Best Picture Winner), 1952 “The Quiet Man”.  His moive the “The Searchers” over the years has grown in stature. Often listed as not only one of the best westerns ever made but one of the best movies ever made!

Part of the reason why he was so successful was he would use the same actors over and over again, and to a lesser extent actress in his movies. He was comfortable with them and the actors, who could put up with Ford, got steady work in quality films. Big names such as John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Victor McLaughlin, Maureen O’Hara … would bring people into the theater. It’s the constant back round faces that are highlighted here. The thespians in question were in all the films that are in the lists after their name. There will be some overlap in the questions. A lot if these people showed up in the same movie.
