The term “dinosaur” is derived from two Greek words - deinos meaning “terrible” and saurus which means “lizard” - and was first used by English Biologist Sir Richard Owen in 1846. Variations for different species names come from a distinctive characteristic or where a fossil was first found.
Brontosaurus, or “thunder lizard”, lived 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period. It is believed to have been the largest dinosaur to ever have roamed the earth and walked on four short sturdy legs but needed to hold its neck parallel to the ground to ensure a constant blood pressure.
Considered to be a herbivore, it is believed they also ingested stones to aid digestion of the large amount of plants they consumed but did not chew.
