The term “dinosaur” is derived from two Greek words - deinos meaning “terrible” and saurus which means “lizard” - and was first used by English Biologist Sir Richard Owen in 1846. Variations for different species names come from a distinctive characteristic or where a fossil was first found.
Stegosaurs were large and heavy built herbivores (plant eaters), with rounded backs and spiky tails which they held high in the air. Their tails were most likely used for defence against predators but, while their distinctive backplates were traditionally thought to also serve a defensive purpose, they were vascularized, meaning they were good for regulating the dinosaur’s temperature. They might also have been used for mating displays.
