Geocache Description:

All Saints Church, Ulting. The church in Ulting was originally built in 1150, and restored in the 1870s. It's such a quite and tranquil spot these days, it seems hard to believe that this tiny church was once a significant site for pilgrimages. The present layout is typical of Victorian idears, the pulpit had to be in the Nave, the Sanctuary had to extend the whole width of the Chancel and the Chancel step had to be higher than the Nave and the Alter step had to be higher than the Chancel. The whole of the church was re-floored with typical tiles of the period. In 1871, the Church was in such a poor state of repair that it had to be almost totally rebuilt. Part of the east wall had collapsed, much of the south wall had to be restored and a new vestry was built. The west wall was also ruinous and was rebuilt in its present form. If you look at the northwest corner of the church you can see the joint between the old and new. The bell is a fine example of the founders art, and it was made in 1636 by Miles Graye of Colchester having perfect harmonics. Perhaps the greatest treasure of All Saint's Church is an Elizabethan Chalice and Paten dated 1571. Unforunately it has to be kept in a bank vault but is used on special occasions. I first found All Saints Church possibly some 40 years ago now, but the memory is still so clear in my mind as I took that long tranquil wander along the river from Paper Mill Lock. And as I rounded the bend in the river the church came into view nestling on the oppersite bank its small spire reflecting in the still waters with dragonfles darting backwards and forwards. A nice easy cache here, please take your time and enjoy the surroundings of Ulting Church, don't miss the wee mouse on the gate, don't  forget your scribbler and Oh, good luck to you.      Its congrats to old regielaw on the ftf, must of had his new running shoes on today!
