Geocache Description:

Waterloo Point

For tens of thousands of years, the Tasmanian aborigines came regularly to this part of Tasmania, drawn by the mildness of the winter climate.  In their seasons they feasted on seafood, mutton-birds and black swan and their eggs.

With plentiful food sources, the Oyster Bay tribe was the largest in Tasmania

Loontitetermairrekehoiner was the Aboriginal name by which this tribe was known.  Fittingly it is the name given to the walking track, which winds its way around Waterloo Point.

It is this area, known as Waterloo Point, which was the site of the first settlement of Swansea originally a military garrison to protect the settlers from aborigines and convicts.  The Captain of the military detachment, George Hibbert was a veteran of the Battle of Waterloo and chose the name Waterloo Point.  The district, however, was known as Great Swanport because of the abundance of black swans, a name given by the first permanent white settlers in the area.

In 1850 after an official survey, carried out some years prior, the name of the town was changed to Swansea and the district became known as Glamorgan being the first rural municipality in Tasmania, but now it is the oldest in Australia, the two earlier ones now being cities.
