LAD the Dog
Kid Friendly Lunchtime Cache Dogs Allowed Less than 500 ft. from car to cache |
Albert Payson Terhune was a children's storybook
writer, as well as a breeder of collies. Eventually he figured the two
things he loved should merge, and he wrote a children's book "Lad the Dog"
based on Lad, a real Collie of his. The book proved quite popular and
eventually there was a whole series of "Lad" books. Terhune lived in Pompton
Lakes on the shores of the Lake for which the town is named. He buried Lad
and all his other collies right there on the property. The Wayne Police also
buried their K9 dogs here too amazingly.... Thanks to the Green
Acres Program his estate was turned into a park, which sits off Terhune Dr,
named for the famous author & collie breeder. The park is small but
beautiful and I hid a cache here in memory of Lad.
Lad's grave is at 41 00.049 W 074 16.526. There also are a number of
graves for Terhune's other collies, including such
champions as Sirgurdson & Explorer, at 41 00.066 74 16.485. If you
follow the edge of the water north there are more collies graves as well as
the Wayne police dog graves. The cache is rather unique. I've been looking for a good place
to hide an easy cache, where hopefully cachers would bring their kids, & this seemed the appropriate place to hide it considering the fact that
Lad was a star of children's' books. This cache contains nothing but
buttons. And not just any buttons, these are good buttons. Political ones,
humorous ones, rock & roll, pins commemorating events (like the 75th
anniversary of the GWB opening) and more. Please only bring buttons to trade
if you can.
Note: this cache will be archived october 31st. Seek it by then or miss out
