The Community Celebration @ Crosswinds Marsh event was held on October 24, 2020 to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Geocaching. The original plan was to hold the event in connection with one of the public events presented by the Crosswinds Marsh Interpretive Center during the spring. Because of the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) situation, the event was canceled, and the Anniversary Celebration was postponed. This cache is one of 12 that was placed in connection with the celebration. The theme of the series is Nature Events Through the Months at Crosswinds.
July: Rise of the insect eaters
Bats are amazing creatures; they consume thousands of mosquitoes per night, they are the only mammal with true flight and they catch food using echolocation. All of these abilities are amazing, but the female bats take it a step further. They do all of this with a baby attached to their body for weeks! When a baby bat, called a pup, is born it will spend the first few weeks of life growing and eating all while hitching a ride with mom as she goes out on her nightly hunts. Pups are born at roughly ⅓ the size of their mother and to support that size and growth an 8 gram female must eat 10 grams of food each night to support both herself and her pup! Now that is quite a feat!
Bonus Cache
There is a 13th Geocache in this series called a Bonus Cache. The only way to obtain the coordinates of this geocache is to solve this puzzle: The coordinates are N 4A BC.DEF W 8G HI.JKL where the numbers associated with letters will be found in the covers of each of the cache containers. Crosswinds Marsh is open from DAWN to DUSK. Admission is free.
