Geocache Description:

PWGT2 Banner.

The Tuia Matauranga Pokai Whenua GeoTour follows the footsteps of early explorers of Aotearoa New Zealand taking you to places where leaders of the past searched for food, resources and ways to adapt and survive in this new land.

Use the Pokai Whenua GeoTour as your classroom to explore the stories of the past, in the present, to preserve what is unique in Aotearoa New Zealand for the future.

Collect the codewords to get the Geocoin puzzle pieces.

To be able to complete this GeoTour and receive your special Geocoin collectable, remember to take a note of the codeword placed in the cache. This will need to be recorded in your passport which can be downloaded here.

63 of the 150 Pokai Whenua GeoTour caches will contain a randomly placed special FTF token (a replica of the Tuia Matauranga GeoTour commemorative coin). This is yours to keep! If you find more than one, you might consider leaving it for the next person who finds the cache.

This is a simple one-step multi cache.

Mangaweka Power Scheme is an historical display at the ruins of a hydro power station on the Mangawharaikei Stream. A 10 metre high dam was constructed in 1911 to provide Mangaweka with town water and sewerage disposal. The enterprise produced electricity until 1937 resulting in Mangaweka being one of the first towns on the Main Trunk line to have its own power for private and street lighting.

From the parking at the given coordinates a short walk on the left hand side leads to an information display in the ruins of the old power house. This is where to find the information to locate the final coordinates.

There is also sections of large rusting pipes and valve gears, so please be careful.
Across the road from the parking, a 5 minute walk leads to the dam. Take care as the track is narrow and slippery in places, and there are no railings or barriers. For this reason the Final in not at either location, but a short distance walk away.

The Final is at S 39° 48.ABC E 175° 48.XYZ where ...

A = "The only source of water was 7A metres  below the level of the township"
B = "The cost of the works, ... was £B,775"
C = "Water was conveyed into the power house through a large inlet pipe, C00mm in diameter"

X = "... vertical turbine of 45 brake horse-power running at 6X5 rev. per minute"
Y = "Over Y metres rise was recorded ..."
Z = "on 17 April 189Z"

Checksum is 41.
