Geocache Description:

The Romani - Gypsies

The Romani (also spelled Romany), colloquially known as Roma, are an Indo-Aryan ethnic group, traditionally nomadic itinerants living mostly in Europe, and diaspora populations in the Americas. The Romani as a people originate from the northern Indian subcontinent, from the Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab regions of modern-day India.

There are several stories explaining the migration. The most accepted ones are:

  1. Many nomadic tribes from north-western India started migrating westward as trade and contact with the western world increased. It was their inherent nature to move, and many tribes would move wherever they thought they could find livelihood. It is assumed that the first waves of such migration started around 500 AD.
  2. Around 900 AD or thereabouts, the Shah of Persia is said to have imported from friendly Indian kingdoms, at least 10,000 of such nomads to move all around Persia and entertain the local population with their well-known song-dance and musical talents.
  3. It is also said that many groups fled in multiple directions, due to the ever-increasing attacks from the north-west on Indian frontiers post 1000 AD. Some of them reached present day Iran and kept moving, via Turkey, Egypt and onto Europe.

Living and cultur

Nowaday, community of Gypsies livin at the margin of society. They usualy living in ghetto or in illegal/legal slums which we can see in the suburbs of Etoliko. They are very often the habbitat of plague like chickenpox or measles and diffrent. Because of very common analphabetism within Gypsies very common is theft, robbery or wandalism. So becarefull if you want to see them in their village (for example they've stolen me in Etoliko my phone, 200 EUR and multitool to repari bicycles, police couldn't do anything). The head of the family is father. He earns money and decides about everything. Women usualy sitting in the house. Most of them can't write their name.
