WALZ CEMETERY
A Tama County Pioneer Burying Ground
Located in the NW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Section 12 in Columbia Township, Tama County, Iowa
Walz Cemetery sits out in a field atop a small ridge, but only visible during months with no standing corn. If you drive by this site, you may see a sign directing you to the burial ground but you may not see it until you are right upon it. The pioneers buried in Walz Cemetery still have family members living on or near this property today.
The description above is largely from the original cache placed at this location. That cache was archived on September 21, 2020, when the sign it had been placed on was found lying on the ground.
On August 10, 2020, the derecho, sometimes referred to as "Iowa Hurricane 2020", which ravaged east-central Iowa (as well as central Illinois and parts of Indiana) with winds clocked as high as 140 mph (that's a category 3 on the hurricane scale) snapped the sign post off at the base.
