George Washington’s role as one of our nation's first spymasters played an important role during the Revolutionary War, as espionage helped win the war for independences.
Washington learned his spycraft during his service in the French and Indian War. He recruited and managed spies. He provided French spies with misinformation. He served under British Major General Edward Braddock who used a cipher and Washington may have used it later against te British.
Washington worked diligently to make sure that he was not deceived. He always compared the intelligence gathered by one spy with that provided by other spies and information obtained from British deserters and locals. He was better in the military application of intelligence than the British.
Both the British and American forces during the Revolutionary War employed a wide range of spy networks and spycraft to gain critical information about the other side. George Washington quickly recognized the need for effective intelligence gathering efforts and developed a number of spy rings and other secret agents to gather information behind enemy lines. Washington was also particularly adept at supplying the British with misinformation that purposely misled his enemies as to his true intentions.
Washington was an excellent spymaster. Spies were always paid in hard currency that is gold and silver. The British had more spies in operation during the war because they could pay more. They obtained more information. Obtaining hard currency was always a problem for Washington. He was always at a disadvantage in the volume of information collected because of the lack of hard currency.
”A paper “continental” bill – it was hard currency that tended to influence agents and recruit spies"
Secrecy is important for all of Washington's spies, you are recruited as secret agent to seek one of Washington's Spies hiding out in the Swamp. It is necessary to gather the secret intelligence from them to locate General George Washington at his secret Swamp camp hideout.
