Geocache Description:

The Lethbridge Full Moon series has been set up to honour the rich folk history of ghosts and hauntings in Lethbridge, and show you some of my favourite spooky spots. They are being released in time for the second full moon of October 2020, which falls on October 31st. This cache is available day or night, but for your best chance at seeing or feeling a ghostly presence, the whole series can be undertaken at night, preferably during the full moon. Use your common sense (and your sixth sense) to stay safe, and bring a buddy.

Each cache in the series will give you a clue to solve the final mystery cache (Full Moon Final: GC915ZV)

This cache is located across Civic Field with a view of the back of the brick Fritz Sick Building to the north. If you’re visiting after dusk, feel free to walk up the sidewalk along the east side of the building and see if you can glimpse anything unusual in the dining room or on the second level (fitness centre).

I used to work in this building and although I never witnessed anything unusual, I would occasionally get that hair-raising feeling on the back of my neck when I worked late on my own. Maintenance staff of the Fritz Sick and the LSCO have reported strange occurrences in the building, from motion-activated doors that open with no one around, footsteps on the second level, toilets flushing by themselves and one cook even experienced a ghostly presence sitting in the dining room in the dark during an early winter morning and then vanishing. When I worked there, I asked our most staid maintenance employee if he believes in ghosts, and if he’d ever seen anything there. He told me that a couple of things have happened that he can’t otherwise explain, most notably once when he was in the building alone he heard a noise that sounded distinctly like something heavy being wheeled down some stairs. He thought maybe someone had borrowed a table saw and was bringing it back, but when he went to check, no one else was there and the exterior door was still locked. He heard the noise one more time that same day and has never heard it before or since.

Also notable is the fact that the only person ever executed within City limits took place here in January 1911. Following traditions of the time, “the body of an executed man must be interred within the grounds of the gaol in which the execution took place, and cannot be removed with an Order-in-Council. Chobotar’s body was placed in a coffin, packed in quicklime, and buried in the seven-foot pit beneath the gallows.” (14 January 1911 Lethbridge Herald) Chobotar was executed in the stableyard of the Mounted Police or, as it is thought to be today, where Fritz Sick Swimming Pool is located.” (From the Lethbridge Historical Society)
