Geocache Description:

*Best approached when travelling Northbound*

For your safety, please DO NOT cross Appin Rd for this cache. If travelling South go past the cache to Brian Road about 1km away on the right, where it is safe to turn around.

Appin is in the lands of the Dharawal people. Appin Road is a New South Wales secondary highway (37kms in length) linking Campbelltown and Sydney's western suburbs with WollongongAppin Road has always been an important access route between the Illawarra and the Campbelltown area. Before the South Coast railway was extended to Wollongong in 1887 the Appin Road was used as the main access route to the Main Southern Railway at Campbelltown, which opened in 1858. There was a daily coaching service running between Campbelltown Railway Station and Wollongong. There is still is daily coach service between Campbelltown and the Illawarra via Appin, although these days it mainly caters to students.

Views from the properties along Appin Road are of open woodland and paddocks. On the southern side, Mount Gilead was joined by the Hume (family) properties, Beulan and Meadowvale (formerly Rockwood). These and others such as Fairview, Blossom Lodge, Mount Carlon and the big poultry farm conducted by Ingham enterprises are all on the western side of the Appin Road. Opposite the last property is one known as Kildare, one of the pioneer homes of the Irish Dwyer family.
