Geocache Description:


From GZ you can see the vacant building that was a pet project of Hibbing native Governor Rudy Perpich. A chopsticks factory in Northern Minnesota!

Opened in 1986, the factory had big dreams of exporting 7 million chopsticks daily to Japan. These goals were never met, and mounting debt and equipment problems shuttered the plant in just 3 years.

The plant was able to ship 12 million pairs of wooden disposable chopsticks to Japan, in its first year.
It’s estimated the chopsticks plant cost taxpayers about 5 million dollars.

 

The building also tried to produce frozen pasta meals, but that project also didn’t succeed. Now it has a large for sale sign in front.
