Geocache Description:

This is the Bonus cache for our H&G Oxenhal Canal Adventure Lab.

The H&G Canal was begun in 1792 and reached Ledbury, from Over Basin, in 1798. However, it wasn't until 1845 that it reached Hereford, a distance of 34 miles. The estimated cost of the canal in 1790 had been £69,997 but in reality, the cost to Ledbury was in excess of £104,000. A further £141,436 eventually saw the canal reach Hereford. The Oxenhall tunnel that has the 5/5 Hippos Below cache is 2192 yards long and is the 13th longest canal tunnel in England. Between 1881 and 1883 the canal closed due to the arrival of the railway which was built on some of the canal route. By 1965 the railway had gone and eventually parts of this became the B4215 Newent to Gloucester road. The price of progress(?)!
